SANS 10400-D:
This part of SANS 10400 deals specifically with the application of the National Building Regulations, including balustrade requirements, according to the Ndlambe Municipality.
Height Requirements:
Standard balustrades (excluding swimming pools) must be at least 1 meter high.
Balustrades for swimming pools must be 1.2 meters high.
Openings:
Balustrades must not have openings that permit the passage of a 100mm diameter ball.
Public Safety:
For certain occupancies (like schools or hospitals), balustrades must have specific safety features, such as no openings that allow the passage of a 100mm ball.
Changes in Level:
Balustrades are required where there is a change in level of more than 1 meter, and they must meet specific height requirements.
Swimming Pools:
Balustrades around swimming pools must be at least 1.2 meters high and include a self-closing gate with no horizontal elements to prevent climbing.
Where to Find the Documents:
The Ndlambe Municipality website and other municipal websites may have sections where they link to relevant SANS documents. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) website is the official source for SANS standards.
Note:
While SANS 10400 is a key standard, the National Building Regulations may also have specific requirements that need to be considered, according to the South African Bureau of Standards. It's advisable to consult with a qualified engineer or building professional for guidance on specific balustrade installations.
